Philadelphia Rail Transit

A comprehensive guide to Philadelphia's rail system.

R1 - Airport / Warminster

Heading out from 30th street station, the R1 turns south before entering the 32nd Street tunnel and achieving daylight once again at Walnut Street. The line crosses through the campus of the University of Pennsylvania before arriving at the 1990's built University City station. University City serves University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia as well as local residents. The line then joins ARSENAL, a complex junction between SEPTA's regional network and Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. The R1 service uses the westernmost track while R3 Media/Elwyn trains split off and head west. The R1 splits from Amtrak's mainline around 58th street and continues south to the airport. After splitting, the line is single track until joining the old Conrail 60th street branch where two tracks are again used. Trains alternate usage of tracks so there are no inbound or outbound tracks as such. The first stop is the late 1990's Eastwick station, a small platform like structure which intersects with subway-surface route 36. The R1 then splits from the Ex-Conrail line and crosses a massive curved bridge across I95, Bartram Av, and airport access roads. The line again reaches ground level first at Terminal A,Terminal B,Terminal E and Terminals C/D. R1 trains operate 06:00 to 00:00 7 days a week and usually terminate at Temple, occasionally running to Warminster or West Trenton.
